Pandora’s Box – Not rated, but with adult situations; Germany, 1929; 141 mins; b/w; newly remastered.
“There is no Garbo! There is no Dietrich! There is only Louise Brooks!” So proclaimed the Cinematheque Français in a Brooks’ film retrospective. Directed by a master of German Expressionism, G.W. Pabst. With Pandora’s Box Brooks (American-born) achieved screen immortality in Pabst’s sensationally modern melodrama, which follows the downward spiral of the fiery, brash, but innocent showgirl, Lulu. Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s greatest masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. Hosted by Prof. Stephen Ambra and film impresario Barry Steelman.
