NHTI Launches Three New Certificates in Human Services and Addiction Counseling
Concord, NH – NHTI, Concord’s Community College has launched three new certificate programs that provide key skills for those interested in pursuing careers in human services or addiction counseling. The Human Services Certificate, Advanced Human Services Certificate and the Substance Use Disorder Treatment (SUD Tx) Certificate each consist of six courses and 19 credits which students can complete in two semesters. Students can apply now for the fall semester.
The Human Service Certificate prepares graduates for entry-level employment in human services professions. Students will gain knowledge of human services delivery systems, case management techniques, ethics and group facilitation skills. This program includes an understanding of the diverse populations which graduates will serve and the communication skills to be successful, including conflict resolution working with diverse populations, and using principles of equity, justice and inclusion.
The Advanced Human Service Certificate provides individuals an opportunity to further explore the human services field. Students will focus their coursework on the specific sector of the helping professions which interests them, such as mental health, gerontology and substance use disorder treatment. The Advanced Human Service Certificate includes an on-site “practicum” requirement of 125 hours over the 15-week semester. Students typically spend 8-10 hours per week at a workplace under a site supervisor, and attend a weekly seminar on campus with other practicum students.
The Substance Use Disorder Treatment (SUD Tx) Certificate prepares graduates for entry-level employment in the field of substance use treatment, a profession which urgently needs qualified professionals. This program will help students develop a strong foundation for a lifetime of engaged employment helping those dealing with issues related to substance misuse.
“There are many career opportunities for students who earn one of these certificates,” said Mike O’Bryant, professor and department chair of the human service and addiction counseling programs. “The need is great in non-profit and for-profit community-based organizations that focus on mental health, gerontology, substance use disorder treatment, social services, child and family services and others. Potential jobs for graduates are quite diverse and include residential instructor and counselor, case manager, direct support worker, recovery and support specialist, social worker assistant, group home aide and referral resource specialist for example. The opportunity for employment is great and students will have many options upon graduating from their program.”
