French film director Henri-Georges Clouzot is noted for his suspenseful thrillers like THE WAGES OF FEAR (1953) and DIABOLIQUE (1955). A superb earlier (and lesser known) example of his highly influential talent is QUAI DES ORFEVRES (1947)–a
police procedural exploring the troubles of post-war France with telling character portraits. When a wealthy, lecherous old man is murdered, there is no shortage of suspects. The investigation is led by a seasoned police inspector (Louis Jouvet) and centers on the jealous husband (Bernard Blier) of a beautiful dance hall performer (Suzy Delair). The noirish B&W cinematography is stunning! In French with English subtitles.
