NHTI Announces Fall 2020 Scholarships
Donors help students in challenging times
CONCORD – NHTI – Concord’s Community College awarded over $83,000 in scholarships to 86 students from 24 scholarship funds for the Fall 2020 semester. NHTI President Gretchen E. Mullin-Sawicki knows that “during these uncertain times, we want to enthusiastically celebrate the success of our students. Balancing school, employment, family, and all that come with those obligations can be daunting, but our students rise to the challenge.” As challenges increase, the need for scholarships increases, and these funds have become even more essential in supporting students with their education goals and career pathways.
One such scholarship, the Frances H. Benton Engineering Scholarship, was created by a 1985 alumna of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. She states, “I am eternally grateful for my education at NHTI, which was my gateway to an interesting career with a living wage. I started the scholarship to encourage students who were demographically underrepresented in engineering fields to pursue a technical degree at NHTI and have similar access to excellent career opportunities that I was provided.” This scholarship fund awarded seven engineering scholarships this fall to students studying computer, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
Another generous donor, Paul Holloway, says, “Our community colleges are an economic engine in New Hampshire and help cost-effectively educate and train our citizens so they can find meaningful and well-paying jobs. Supporting scholarships will directly help students complete their studies and help our colleges maintain their level of excellence.”
Students in a wide array of disciplines such as nursing, dental hygiene, criminal justice, general studies, information technology, liberal arts, accounting, business, robotics and automation engineering, civil engineering, radiologic technology, paramedic emergency medicine, and education all benefitted from these 24 scholarship funds and expressed their gratitude in writing to the donors or administrators of each fund. Caleb Chapman, a student in the Radiation Therapy program, wrote, “Finding resources and financial support has become difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic, but this scholarship has allowed me to pay for this semester without using student loan funding. Thank you for helping me fulfill my goal of becoming a radiation therapist.”
