Pilotte Earns 2 Prestigious National Scholarships
CONCORD – NHTI – Concord’s Community College is proud to announce that student Kelly Pilotte has earned two prestigious national scholarships:
- She is one of 20 college students named to the prestigious All-USA Academic Team and will receive a $5,000 scholarship. More than 2,400 students were nominated for this award.
- She has been named a 2023 New Century Transfer Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship.
Pilotte is a nontraditional, service-oriented, online student at NHTI. After graduating high school, she served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is employed as a mail carrier for the USPS. She graduated from NHTI in 2022 with a degree in Addiction Counseling and is continuing her education in Business Administration/non-profit with the goal of founding a recovery center. She raised three sons and, with her husband, has three grandchildren.
Four years ago, she lost her son Sgt. Michael Boyd to a Fentanyl overdose. He served as a Marine during Operation Enduring Freedom and was deployed to the war in Afghanistan.
“Since his death, I have dedicated my life to the service of others, particularly those with substance use disorders and who are unhoused,” Pilotte says.
In 2019, Pilotte began a nonprofit organization and serves as its CEO, mentoring high school students who serve as volunteers. Each week, they bring clothing, food, and other necessities to the local homeless population. Together they advocate for ending the stigma of addiction, homelessness, and mental health disorders. She has also established a scholarship at NHTI to support the financial needs of students who pursue Addiction Counseling degrees and to inspire others to achieve their goals.
“My goal in sharing my experience is to encourage others to find their own way to offer service to those around them.,” she says. “The same people who work towards supporting the development and well-being of others are ultimately the ones who find success in their own leadership. These are the people who can and will change the world.”
About the Scholarships
All-USA Academic Team members were selected for their outstanding intellectual achievement, leadership, community, and campus engagement. The All-USA Academic Team is sponsored by Cengage, with additional support provided by Phi Theta Kappa and AACC. Cengage’s industry-leading subscription for textbooks and materials, Cengage Unlimited, has helped over 4.8M students save over $580M on the cost of course materials since August 2018. Pilotte will be recognized during the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) convention in April.
New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Over 2,400 students were nominated from more than 1,300 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Transfer Scholar is selected from each state. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the AACC.
“We congratulate Kelly for receiving this prestigious scholarship, and we are honored to partner with the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, and the AACC to recognize these outstanding achievements,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “Scholarship programs like this are integral for creating opportunities for two-year college students to succeed and for putting college completion within reach.”
“We are deeply inspired by the achievements of this year’s All-USA Academic Team. With so much focus and pressure on which post-secondary institution a student attends, these students show that the real keys to success are hard work and determination,” said Edwin Robles, senior vice president and general manager of U.S. Higher Education and Canada at Cengage. “Community colleges play an important role in providing affordable education that helps students transition successfully to the workforce or a 4-year institution. Despite facing significant enrollment headwinds since the pandemic, community colleges have been the most innovative in taking steps to make learning more flexible, affordable and accessible. We are proud to support these institutions and their students in their continued success.”
The All-USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending associate degree-granting institutions. Each college may nominate two students for showing intellectual rigor and demonstrating academic achievement, leadership, and civic growth. The program also recognizes students who extend their community college education to better themselves, their schools, and their surrounding communities.
