SUMMARY:Film Screening: Black Dog
DESCRIPTION:Black Dog “Not Rated\, but with Adult Situations” (China\, 2024) 116 mins. \nBlack Dog\, winner of numerous international awards\, including the coveted “Un Certain Regard” Film Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival\, Black Dog is a Noirish mystery about a man named Lang (played by the internationally famous – but almost unrecognizable – actor Eddie Peng) released from jail who returns to his hometown in Northwest China on the edge of the Gobi Desert\, only to face the ghosts of his troubled past. Taking the only work he can\, he starts rounding up stray dogs as China prepares for the 2008 Olympics – and as his hometown is being demolished (“urban renewaled”) for the building of a new city. After encountering a stray black dog\, the man and dog – two solitary souls – begin to bond\, creating a powerful arc of redemption.
