Residence Hall Maintenance
The Residence Life staff will conduct periodic room checks to ensure the safety and upkeep of the physical facilities of the residence halls. Damages to the residence hall will result in an assessment to the individual or group responsible based on the actual cost to repair or replace the item or structure affected. Windows should not be forced open, and window ledges should not be used as storage areas. Removal of a window or screen will result in a fine of $25 per student. Any maintenance or safety violation found in any room will result in a fine. Any excessive mess in the common areas will result in a fine to the hall, group, or individual responsible.
Residence Hall Common Area Expectations/Procedures
Keeping the shared spaces in the residence halls clean and safe for use needs to be a team effort that includes students, Residence Life and Custodial Services. These spaces include lounges, kitchens, kitchenettes, and other shared spaces. Together, we can maintain a clean and healthy environment living environment that encourages a passion for community, and a respect for all individuals who use the spaces.
The general expectation is that students will clean up after themselves each time they use a shared space. This means:
For kitchen and kitchenette spaces:
- Putting away all ingredients used.
- Wiping down the used area.
- Washing, drying and putting away all used cookware and dishes.
- Placing all resulting trash in appropriate receptacles.
For Lounge spaces:
- Picking up trash and placing it in proper receptacles.
- Putting furniture back where it was when you entered the lounge.
- Returning any borrowed equipment (pool supplies, video game controllers, etc.)
The shared residence hall spaces are spaces designated for the residents of that hall. Guests of residents are permitted to use these shared spaces if they are following all policies, including the guest policy and are always with their host.
For South Hall kitchen use, Residence Life will begin to provide disposable dishes and cookware for student use which can be disposed of in the trash when done. This may result in a higher amount of trash in the South kitchen but will reduce amount of dirty dishes/cookware left behind.
While Residence Life still has dishes to lend, we will require that they are cleaned and returned within 24 hours of being signed out. If the dishes are not returned clean, the student will lose their privilege to sign them out in the future. Any dirty dishes left for over 72 hours will be disposed of in the trash.
Residence Hall Directors:
- RDs will walk through their buildings daily.
- RDs will check the RA on duty task list for completion and any notes left by RAs from the previous night each morning.
- RDs will investigate any excessive messes left by students and hold the responsible parties accountable. Possible individual consequences may include additional cleaning service by the student, fines, loss of shared space privileges or loss of housing privileges. When the responsible individual cannot be ascertained, a community response will be implemented which includes communication, expectations and potential community fines if the situation is not corrected.
- RDs will hold RAs accountable for completing their rounds as indicated in the RA manual, duty checklists and via direction by the RD. RDs will use the accountability rubric as guidance for this.
- If signed out dishes/cookware are not returned within 24 hours, the RD will text and email the students reminded them and instructing them to return them clean within 24 hours.
Hall RAs:
- RAs should note who is using the shared spaces when doing rounds and note this in the duty log.
- RAs are expected to keep the fridges clean and updated weekly (including removing dated or unlabeled food as needed).
- Wipe down stovetops when needed.
- Clean the Keurig coffee machine weekly.
For South Hall:
- Wipe down windowsills in kitchen area.
- Inspect and when clean the air fryer daily.
- Monitor locker spaces.
