Smoking, Tobacco, and Tobacco Alternatives Policy
The purpose of this policy is to promote the health and wellbeing of all NHTI students, faculty, staff, and the general public in accordance with the state of New Hampshire Indoor Smoking Act, federal and state tobacco and tobacco alternatives laws and recommendations from the American Cancer Society, the American College Health Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Lung Association.
- Smoking – including the use of smokeless tobacco or tobacco alternatives such as electronic cigarettes, vaping, or any other substance – is prohibited on campus and in all CCSNH- or NHTI-owned or leased buildings and vehicles. This policy applies to all grounds, parking areas, athletic fields, walking trails, etc. except in designated smoking areas. The designated smoking areas are:
- Two smoking shelters located by Langley Hall and between Grappone Hall and Strout Hall
- Within a privately-owned vehicle
- It is prohibited by State of NH RSA 126-K to sell, provide, or furnish tobacco, tobacco alternative devices (vapes, e-cigarettes, e-liquids, etc.), or rolling papers to persons under 21.
- Persons who have not reached the age of 21 are prohibited by State of NH RSA 126-K from purchasing or possessing tobacco, tobacco alternative devices (vapes, e-cigarettes, e-liquids, etc.), or rolling papers.
- The sale or free distribution of tobacco or tobacco alternative products on campus is prohibited. This includes the sale of individual cigarettes as prohibited by NH RSA 126-K.
- Tobacco or tobacco alternative-specific product advertisements are prohibited in college-run publications.
- Campus organizations are prohibited from accepting sponsorship from tobacco or tobacco alternative-specific companies.
Policy Enforcement and Seizure of Prohibited Tobacco-Related Items
All members of the NHTI community are expected to observe this policy and are encouraged to ask any individuals who are using tobacco or tobacco alternatives in an unauthorized area to cease to do so. Any violation of NH RSA 126-K regarding sales, distribution, furnishing to, or possessing of any persons under 21 tobacco, tobacco alternative devices (vapes, e-cigarettes, e-liquids, etc.), or rolling papers, and for any person selling individual cigarettes will have products seized as contraband. Any violation of this policy will result in the following:
- Referral for students to NHTI Student Conduct
- Referral for employees to supervisor in accordance with workplace policies
- Non-campus individuals will be required to cease use; failure may result in removal from NHTI property
Fine Schedule for Smoking Policy Violations
Smoking Indoors
- First violation: $50; second and subsequent violations: $100
Smoking Outside in Non-Designated areas
- First violation: $25; second and subsequent violations: $50
All fines are to be paid within 10 days of the date of issue. Payment is to be made at the Bursar’s Office or via the Student Information System. Failure to pay fines may result in the withholding of grades and degree.
